Math Monday: Spring Fever

6 strategies for teachers for combating spring fever at the end of the school year

Happy Math Monday!
This month the Math Mondays Blog Hop is all about Spring Fever.
The end of the school year will be here before we know it.  The nice weather is here.  Students are feeling it.  Teachers are feeling it.  What are we to do?

I personally like to think of spring as a time of renewal.  Amidst all of the craziness and excitement, consider these ideas for both your personal and professional life to help keep yourself feeling balanced, energized, and ready to tackle the challenges you will encounter.

1 Take a yoga class
I tried Kripalu yoga a couple of years ago on whim, and I honestly don’t know how I ever lived without it.  I love my instructor and have followed her to three different locations.  I always leave the practice feeling balanced, calm, and prepared to take on challenges with a level head.  It is just as much a mental health practice as it is physical.

2 Go for a walk
I live in New Hampshire so this time of year the snow is melted, birds are returning and can be heard singing, days are getting longer with more sunlight, and leaves will soon be budding.  I love to get outside and go for a walk.  Sometimes I take the whole family with me, and other times it is really nice to have some “me” time.

3 Purge excess papers
Spring cleaning for the classroom!  This is a great time to tackle that pile of random papers sitting in the corner of the room.  File them, return them, or recycle them.  Time to cut down on the clutter!

4 Have students clean the classroom
Middle school students love to help clean the classroom.  Pass out wipes for desks, tables, and doorknobs; ask other students to tidy up and organize; and others can get those whiteboards squeaky clean.  You will be amazed how great the room will look in 10 minutes or less.

5 Assign students independent work
I always felt so guilty when I would assign students work to do silently and independently at their seats.  I am typically a very interactive, hands-on teacher.  Do yourself a favor and lose the guilt.  Take a day or two next month, give the students an independent assignment, and sit at your desk to get caught up on emails, grading, planning, or whatever you need.  You will thank yourself when you get home a little earlier and can enjoy some extra time with your family in the nice weather.

6 Eat lunch outside
Grab your teacher friends and soak up some Vitamin D.  It might only be for 15 minutes, but you will feel great!  Sometimes we’ve sat together and chatted and other times we’ve walked the track to turn it into a power walk session.
